K–8 educators can help striving readers thrive with this new resource from Scholastic Professional

A new professional book, titled From Striving to Thriving: How to Grow Confident, Capable Readers, from literacy specialists Stephanie Harvey, President of Stephanie Harvey Consulting, and Annie Ward, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for the Mamaroneck Union Free School District in Westchester County, NY, is now available.

Beginning with a creative and moving foreword from the author and illustrator of the Captain Underpants series, Dav Pilkey, this new resource offers K–8 educators methods for using detailed, formative assessments to craft targeted, personalized instruction and support striving students in finding books that they love so that they can engage in voluminous reading and become thriving readers.

Harvey and Ward use a three-part framework to shape the chapters in their book, highlighting the mindset and spirit needed to help readers thrive: trust, teach, and transform. Part one, Trust, encourages educators to refrain from labeling students, think beyond reading levels, cultivate curiosity, ensure access to and choice of books, and increase students’ reading volume. Part two, Teach, hones in on book-matching and teaching thinking-intensive reading. Part three, Transform, focuses on assessing the whole reader and advocating for students.

This professional resource also incorporates ready-to-go practice lessons, action steps, and research that will help educators gain an understanding of the reading process, use strength-based performance data, and implement knowledge of high-quality instruction. The book also comes with an extensive online resource bank with downloadable assessments, “Top Ten” guides to share with parents and administrators, and video clips of reading conferences and book talks.
