From Book Box Daily - "Holiday Picks for Older Readers"

We recently heard the rhyming suggestion that holiday gifts for children should cover four categories:

A gift they want
A gift they need
A gift to wear
A gift to read

We’re not qualified to say what the children in your life might want, might need, or should wear, but we do have some suggestions about books they can read!

Here are some picks from our editorial team for the older readers on your list.

Carolyn would hand out these books:

Roy has been sharing these titles with the animal lovers that he knows:

  • What is happiness, and how can we get more of it in the New Year? The Little Book of Happy features not only inspiring quotations but also photos of the world’s happiest animals.
  • The Dog Who Saved Christmas is full of true stories about real animals who helped turn the holidays into a magical season. You’ll never forget their incredible stories!

Kristin’s list includes a graphic novel and beautifully illustrated hardcovers:

  • If you want to curl up with a good book for the holiday break, you can’t go wrong with The Marvels by Brian Selznick. Gorgeous illustrations tell one half of the story of a mysterious family, and secrets are revealed in the second half, written in prose.
  • See the Boy Who Lived in a whole new way with this stunning new illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling, illustrated by Jim Kay. Perfect for old fans or new.
  • Looking for the perfect present for your graphic novel loving kid who’s already devoured everything by Raina Telgemeier? Try Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson for a delightful read about friendship, growing up, and girl power!

Lucille knows how one popular title can lead to a lifetime of reading:

Lori is also a Harry Potter fan, but she takes a slightly different approach:

  • When I was in third grade, I started reading Harry Potter with my mother. I shared the magical adventures with Harry every night and now children can create their own magic with the Harry Potter Coloring Book. Perfect for families looking for some fun on a snowy, winter day!
