7 tips for National Nutrition Month from Choices magazine

Today we're sharing a guest post from the editors at Choices magazine. Check out their tips for National Nutrition Month below, and be sure to visit their great blog,Teenbeing, for more health and wellness tips!

This year’s National Nutrition Month®, organized annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, challenges us all to “enjoy the taste of eating right.” Fortunately, Choices magazine has been preparing for this challenge all year long! And in order to celebrate, we’re going to share our top seven tips and for combining delicious and nutritious, as well as some of our all-time favorite food stories. Check them out below!

  1. Eat a good breakfast. That may be a duh, but someone’s eating all those doughnuts. Just sayin’. No worries! We’ll help you start the day off right with our Survival Guide to Breakfast.
  2. Don’t get fooled by food. Serving sizes, marketing messages—even the size of your bowl can mess with your mind. Food companies are using these psychological tricks to get you eat more and want more so you’ll buy more, but we’ll teach you how to have your cake and eat it too (in the right portion!).
  3. Know which 10 foods you should be eating. We created a guide for teens, but it applies to everyone. Read it now! Sneak peek: We’ll give you an excuse (as if you needed one) to say yes to buttery, nutty, omega-3-rich avocado. And for healthy recipes using our top 10, check out all of our Monday Munchies recipes on TeenBeing.
  4. Know which foods to avoid like the plague. Walk away from the cheese puffs, people! We know it’s not easy, but you can do it. Wanna know why, and what else you need to put a cap on? Check out this Choices exposé.
  5. Read nutrition labels really closely. It can be tricky, but we break down how to decipher them in this video.
  6. Get involved in your grub. Nothing is more delicious than DIY—and healthier, too. Get inspired by teens across the country who are changing their lives, as well as their friends’ and families’, one bite at a time. Plus, some of our favorite, super-yummy recipes to get you started.
  7. Kick the can. Sorry soda lovers, but at least try giving it up for National Nutrition Month. There’s nothing—nada, nil, zilch, zippo—good for you in a soda. Get scared straight by reading our takedown of this fizzy fiasco.
