500,000 kids are ready to read this summer

Big news on the summer reading front: we learned today that teachers have registered over 500,000 students from over 21,000 classrooms to participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. And the challenge hasn't even begun yet (crazy, right?).

The challenge will officially launch at 9am EST Monday morning, at which point over half a million kids will start logging the minutes they spend reading, all in an effort to set a new World Record for summer reading. We've already heard from teachers, students, and parents on social media that they're geared up and ready to go. It's going to be big.

There's SO much happening on this coming Monday that coincides with this launch. Let's break it down:

The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge officially begins! Kids can log their reading minutes, win cool prizes, watch videos of astronauts and scientists and authors, and watch as our cool constellations light up on the website. Kids can also search for their school in our interactive map to see how it's stacking up against the competition.

Also launching: a Facebook content calendar that offers parents a FREE reading resources every single day of the summer, from printables to articles to a giveaway every Friday. The calendar is optimized for mobile as well so you can browse resources and enter sweepstakes on the go.

Wait, there's more...the Reading Timer App will be live on May 5th with new tips, articles, and book recommendations for parents. Oh, and it's free!

OK, one more (awesome) thing: at 9pm EST we're hosting a Virtual Book Swap on the Scholastic Parents Facebook page, featuring book gurus Lori Ess and Betsy Bird! Have you RSVPed yet?
