5 "summer survival" tips for parents

The first few weeks of summer are pure magic. But now it's August, and kids have gone from no-homework happy to “I’m bored!”

Well, Klutz has you covered! Here are five boredom busters to beat the heat in the final weeks of school vacation:

1) Blow bubbles like never before

Shake up some bubble fun with a new twist on bubble-catching! Try having the kids run past bubbles without popping them to earn points and turn a momentary diversion into a game of super-silly skill. And if itty-bitty bubbles aren’t cutting it, you can always bring in the big, monstrous, unbelievably huge bubbles (What to read: How to Make Monstrous, Huge, Unbelievably Big Bubbles).

2) Get an early start on talent show prep

Help your kiddo hone a secret talent they can tuck up their sleeve. Juggling is a classic, timeless way to wow any crowd, but it takes a little bit of practice to get the hang of. Luckily, those long stretches of downtime between slumber parties and beach trips are perfect for sharpening their whimsical skills. By the time the talent show rolls around this school year, they’ll have a circus-worthy act at the ready!  (What to read: Juggling for the Complete Klutz)

3) Cast a spell on unsuspecting friends

Who doesn’t love a good card trick or a disappearing coin? Your kids can be crazy cool in the summer heat and put on mysterious, mystical shows. Crafting their magical persona so they can maximize their mesmerizing abilities is a creative project that will keep them entertained for hours. (What to read: Prankster Magic)

4) Get nostalgic with woven wonders

Remember these? The friendship bracelet lives on! With tons of designs, simple and not-so-simple, your kids will fill their wrists (and the wrists of all their BFFs) in no time at all. (What to read: Friendship Bracelets)

5) Unleash their inner artist

Less-than-ideal weather got you and the kids cooped up inside? Bring a little adventure to the great indoors with drawing books that let them explore any corner of the universe they can dream up on the comfortable confines of a sketchpad. Whether they’re sketching their favorite characters from movies and TV shows or branch out to make their own creations, learning the basics of drawing is a great way to pass the time. Plus, you get artwork to cherish forever. (What to read: Draw Star Wars Rebels/Draw the DC Universe)
