Designing your own professional development (and a giveaway!)

As former Oregon teacher of the year Steve Wyborney reminds us in his recent blog post, teachers are in charge of their own professional learning and growth. We must seize opportunities to collaborate with colleagues and mentors and continually seek answers to the burning questions we have about teaching and learning.

Participating in professional learning communities, performing action research, taking classes, reading professional books and articles, interacting with teachers on social media—these are all wonderful ways for educators to gather new ideas, refine teaching practices, and receive support and feedback. In addition to these valuable activities, don’t neglect attending local education conferences.

At statewide or regional events, you’ll have the opportunity to hear nationally recognized speakers share the latest thinking on current educational topics. You’ll also get to choose from a wide array of breakout sessions, some of which are nearly guaranteed to address the questions you are currently wrestling with. As you tailor your conference experience to your interests, you’ll meet like-minded teachers from around your state, exchanging ideas and insights and building your professional network.

While you’re there, be sure to

●Check out the book signings. Picture book authors and illustrators often attend conferences to promote their work, as do professional book authors—you might get a chance to take a picture with your favorite writer or ask them a question!

●Scope out the exhibit hall. Many exhibitors offer freebies to teachers, and there are usually great discounts on books and other materials.

●Attend social events. Often organizations will host receptions, poetry readings, pizza nights—any number of events to foster community among participants.

When you return home to your school, you’ll have a wealth of information, materials, and ideas to share along with new connections to tap when the next burning question is keeping you up at night.

By attending the SoMIRAC

By attending the SoMIRAC conference, I would be able to meet authors and illustrators and learn their writing process, which I would share with my 3rd-5th grade writing club. The most important aspect of the conference is keeping up to date on the latest educational theories and sharing them with my co workers.

I am most excited about

I am most excited about meeting and learning from the best of the best in regards to instilling a love of reading in our students! (Donnalyn Miller, Colby Sharp, John Schu, etc) :)

Yeah Colby! Hey MI Teachers..

Yeah Colby! Hey MI Teachers... don't forget that Colby and I are hosting a Friday Night Pure Mich Kick Off Party! Don't miss out on the fun! March 27 6-9 near registration!

As this year's MRA Conference

As this year's MRA Conference Chair, I am excited that two more lucky teachers will be joining us! Good luck to all that post. Can't wait for an exciting conference and seeing you there also! Check out michiganreading.org for more info! Thanks, Scholastic!

I run our middle school

I run our middle school library and I am always looking for ways to make it better. I would love to listen to Donnalyn Miller about the best new books. Colby Sharp and the Nerdy Book Club always has great ways to get kids excited about reading. I also love to hear from the authors about their inspirations and tribulations in writing-my students love to get background information about the stories I book talk.

This would be a perfect

This would be a perfect opportunity to connect with and learn from some of the most influential educators that I follow in my PLN. I co-teach with a special educator and we actively attend workshops, take on line classes and webinars, and read and discuss many books and articles that help us to become better educators.

Last year at the Michigan

Last year at the Michigan Reading Association's conference, I was able to hear Jim Burke speak about how he has put the demands of the Common Core into his curriculum. I was able to use, with his permission, a self-reflection rubric that mirrors the demands of this curriculum in student-friendly language. The workshop enhanced what I was doing in my classroom. Because of this direct connection to improved classroom instruction, our high school actually wrote the MRA conference into the School Improvement Plan for 2014-15. Sadly, we had to make cuts at the district level, and our plan to send three teachers to the conference was undone. This offer would allow at least one person in my department to go free of cost. The excitement of new tools to use in the classroom, however, will be priceless.

I would love to be able to

I would love to be able to attend the MRA Conference in Grand Rapids! The opportunity to learn directly from the experts and to collaborate with teachers from throughout the state is priceless. In addition, one of my students from last year has had his writing selected to be published in the MRA Kaleidescope Magazine and the presentation and luncheon is that weekend. I would love to be able to represent him there.

Every student should have the

Every student should have the opportunity to become a life-long learner. By furthering my reading education, I strive to instill a love of reading in each of my kindergartners.

As we all know, fostering the

As we all know, fostering the love of reading and writing in our students is one of the most powerful tools we have as educators. Reading skills are essential when mastering learning and reaching full potential. I'm most excited about hearing from Alan Sitomer as he has experience with inner city and underperforming students which is the environment I work in and have worked in for 5 years. I feel like he will have a lot of useful information based on his experience. Also, Karen Biggs Tucker would be great to see due to her knowledge and experience with engaging our students through reading and writing. I would love the opportunity to gain knowledge from this conference to bring back and implement in my classroom.

I am excited to have a chance

I am excited to have a chance to meet with collegues ( 7 staff are attending plus 4 presenting)and discuss our teaching life and reading insights in an off -site format. We have no chance to do this any more. The connections are invaluable and it provides a discussion format to help build our reading communities.

I always love hearing Colby

I always love hearing Colby and Donalyn speak because they are so passionate about what they do that it is infectious! Also would love to see Teri Lesesne! I follow her on Twitter but have not had the opportunity to see her in person. Matt Faulkner also has a new book out :). So many special presenters it's hard to pick just a couple things I want to go for. MRA is one of the best PD's I have ever been to!

I am a kindergarten teacher

I am a kindergarten teacher in a Title I building working with at-risk students. I am always searching for ways to meet the many diverse needs of the students I am working with. By going to this conference, I would be able to take back to my school researched methods and best practices for teaching reading. I would get to learn and share with other educators, and take back meaningful experiences with me into my classroom. I have never attended an MRA conference before. Therefore, this would be an opportunity that I would appreciate greatly as an educational tool and stepping stone to share ideas out with others in my school district, and help better meet the needs of my students.

I am excited to attend

I am excited to attend breakout sessions on engaging my students in deeper level thinking. I looking for fresh and exciting ideas for teaching common core. Thanks!

One of the teachers in our

One of the teachers in our building will be receiving an award at the conference! She is one of my mentors and such a wonderful supporter of getting books into kids hands. I love to go and listen to authors so I can tell my 4th graders, "I got to hear this author and the book will make you think about things in a new way." I love checking out what is new and talking with other teachers about their reading workshops.

I have never been to MRA. I

I have never been to MRA. I would soak up every bit of it! I would attend every session I could. I would come back excited to share all the resources. Coming back inspired and sharing that excitement with others. Seeing the ideas and information being placed into classrooms upon my return would be priceless.

The past couple years I have

The past couple years I have taken over the responsibility for teaching reading and writing to my students in our center-based program. It is a struggle but I love watching them grow. Any chance I get to further my understanding, not only helps me but benefits my students as well.

I'm looking forward to

I'm looking forward to connecting with all the great educators from across the state of Michigan at the MRA conference. There are so many enthusiastic presenters, attendees, and the Nerdy Book Club that this is PLC heaven! Always love the vendor hall and connecting with my Heinemann rep as well. Can't wait!

I have always wanted the

I have always wanted the opportunity to attend the MRA conference, and feel that now, more than ever, it is a great opportunity to learn about what is new in reading education. I am a lifelong learner who is always on the lookout for the newest best practices for my young readers. With all of the changes that are currently happening in education, I would love the opportunity to attend this conference!

I am looking forward to

I am looking forward to hearing from many of the amazing presenters on how to lay a solid foundation for young readers. I am excited that one of my professors, Dr. Sharma, will be presenting. She has really raved about this conference and I would love to attend.

I am always so inspired and

I am always so inspired and invigorated when I attend MRA! My students benefit from the excitement that I bring back to share with them. It would be exciting to win a registration for this year!

I am looking forward to

I am looking forward to growing as an educator at the MRA conference. I am most excited about the phenomenal speakers that will be there! I can't wait to take what I will learn and bring it back to my students.

By attending the MRA

By attending the MRA conference, I am most interested in learning in new ways to network with other professionals to have the greatest impact in my classroom and students to prepare them as best as I can for all literacy tasks they will encounter. I want to learn various avenues to empower these scholars to persevere and be their own advocates for learning.

I am so excited to learn

I am so excited to learn strategies for close reading for elementary students. As an instructional coach, I am always looking for new books, interesting lesson ideas, and technology resources that inspire teachers to engage their students in relevant, purposeful reasons to enjoy and deeply understand text.

I am most excited to learn

I am most excited to learn from "experts" in and around the field of education. Learning from innovative colleagues to push my thinking and invigorate my work with teachers and students.

I have attended many

I have attended many professional development conferences in my career and last year's MRA was by far the best. The ability to have access to education leaders on a smaller scale than a national conference was such a blessing. In addition, i was introduced to the members of the Nerdy Book Club who were the most gracious educators I've ever met. I am looking forward to hearing Dr. Mary Bigler, whom I find inspirational, as well as to attend the Pure Michigan event sponsored by Colby and Lisa. That should be exciting as well as informative.

I would be thrilled to have

I would be thrilled to have the chance to participate in the Michigan Reading Conference for so many reasons. I am interested in learning new methods to engage my students in our daily reading lessons. I am also very passionate about finding ways to teach my students a love of reading through daily read alouds, literacy centers, guided reading, and more. Participating in the conference would provide me with an invaluable opportunity to interact with teachers and learn from their ideas, gain insight into new ideas from the various presenters, and feed me with a new inspiration for teaching reading to my students. For the past 4 years I have wanted to attend the conference, but have never been able to afford to go. It would mean the world to me to have the opportunity this year!

I am most interested on

I am most interested on learning about Reading interventions to help with my students. I am a new 1st grade teacher, and feel that this conference would allow me to become a better educator. Reading Workshop is another topic I would like to learn more about. Also any sessions about boy readers would be of interest to me.

I attended the conference

I attended the conference last year and was blown away by all the valuable things I brought back into my classroom! I especially enjoyed listening to Donalyn Miller speak. I have since read her books and would love to hear her speak again! It really looks like a fantastic group of educators and leaders coming together support learning and reading!

After 7 years teaching first

After 7 years teaching first grade, I am now in my second year teaching 5th grade. I have earned a masters in reading and would relish the opportunity to attend this conference for the professional development and great idea gathering.

By attending the Michigan

By attending the Michigan Reading Association conference, I hope to network with peers in my profession (literacy coach) and work to develop strategies to meet the needs of all of my students (both struggling, on target, and advanced).

More than anything, I would

More than anything, I would LOVE to attend this years MRA conference. I would love to soak up the energy for passionate teachers and knowledge for young readers and writers to return to my elementary building and share. Thank you for sharing the love of love of reading, writing, and learning with teachers!!

If I were lucky enough to

If I were lucky enough to attend the conference, I would most look forward to discovering new strategies to get students excited about reading as well as new ways to monitor student reading for accountability. I would also be interested in learning new ways to help students with making inferences during their reading for better understanding. Good luck to me!!!

I am so excited to learn

I am so excited to learn about finding the right texts to support a project. I am looking for new and exciting ways to teach our curriculum and projects are so much fun! I am hoping to connect this new skill with the information from the digital reading workshop. I can't wait to go!

This would be an exciting

This would be an exciting opportunity for any educator to be among their peers and leaders experiencing the gift of Reading through the eyes and ears of other people. It allows you to bring back the experiences to your students and helps them to be excited about reading even though it is difficult for many of them. This opportunity would be a great way to collaborate with colleagues learning the latest ideas and techniques to help build the love of reading into my students. Educationally yours, Tammy

I would love to be able to

I would love to be able to attend the MRA Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan! I originally started my teaching career at the community college level, but this is my second year teaching at the elementary level. I had the opportunity to attend the conference last year, and I learned a lot to take back to my school and use with my young students. The chance to learn directly from the experts and to collaborate with other elementary teachers is an incredible experience that I'd be grateful to do again this year.

I am currently registered to

I am currently registered to attend MRA. I have gone for the last three years and feel that PD is crucial in all teachers' repertoire. The expansion of ideas based on others' perspectives leads me to improve what I am doing daily with my students. I, also, like to share with my staff. :) I would love the opportunity to offset some cost to my district. Thank you.

I am most excited about being

I am most excited about being able to listen to Dr. Marzano in person. I have been evaluated by his principles in our schools testing using his evaluation method and have read how Strategic Intervention Methods line up with his teaching but have never had direct training in his methods.

The most interesting part of

The most interesting part of the MRA conference is the many break-out sessions that are offered. If it was my choice,I would clone myself so that I could attend them all...lol. I always learn something new when I attend. Unfortunately, It has been awhile since I have been. However, my last conference left me eager and excited to try the many strategies that I learned with my class.

I am most interested in going

I am most interested in going to the Michigan Reading Association conference in order to connect with other educators and learn about what they are doing in their classrooms to make reading instruction more effective for their students. I would love to bring those ideas back to my staff and share with them what is happening in the field of reading education.

I am super excited about the

I am super excited about the opportunity to win registration to the MRA conference in Grand Rapids. I'm a elementary/middle school teacher and reading doctoral student who has been on a child care leave for the last two years due to my son's special needs. I will be returning to work in the fall. Attending the MRA conference will give me the opportunity to catch up on current pedagogy, interact with my colleagues, and help me prepare to be the best teacher I can be for my students in the fall.

I am most interested in

I am most interested in learning how to work both reading and writing in such a small amount of time. I love the ideas that I get from other professionals that I can bring back to the classroom. The last time I went, I learned so much about close reading and having a purpose in why we read. I need more of that for writing now. Pick me for Michigan!

I would love to go to the

I would love to go to the Michigan Reading conference. I have been teaching for many years but I am new to teaching primary grades. I would like to learn more ideas for teaching reading and writing with my inner city kindergartners, especially those who are far behind where Common Core tells us we should be.

I am simply excited about the

I am simply excited about the whole experience. I have never been to a conference and it is only my second year in a general education classroom. I am excited to learn new ways of teaching, organizing and thinking. I am always looking for ways to improve my craft and enjoy being pushed to think outside the box. The educational leaders that I have the opportunity to listen to and learn from will only make me a better teacher! My students and I both will benefit greatly from this conference.

I am looking forward to

I am looking forward to checking out the exhibit hall. I love that the exhibitors offer freebies to teachers, and great prices on books and other materials. I am most interested in ELA textbooks (anthologies) from publishers such as Scott Foresman, etc.

I would love the opportunity

I would love the opportunity to attend the conference! I work in an urban Title 1 school with 90% EL students. Always looking for new ideas and strategies to improve my instruction and the reading abilities of my students. Would welcome the chance to hear up to date best practices and how to further incorporate Common Core into the curriculum. Thanks for the opportunity!

If I were able to attend the

If I were able to attend the Michigan Reading Association's Conference this year, I believe that I would be able to learn new strategies to improve my reading and writing instructional practices. It is my hope to walk away with tools that I can use immediately in the classroom with my students when I return. I am responsible for instructing 80 4th graders each day. The impact of what I'd take away would be huge! I also hope to get a better understanding of how to reach those students who are low achieving as well as motivate those who are reluctant readers. And to top it all off, I'd get the opportunity to meet and share space with the AMAZING author Christopher Paul Curtis. My students just wrapped up a novel study of the Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963. They are counting on me to show off what they did (via secret envelope) and come back with an autograph! The Annual MRA conference would be a priceless experience for a teacher and bibliophile like me!
