It's finally here: the Summer Challenge! Think kids will break the world record for reading again?

My month of letters comes to an end

My month of letters comes to an end

By on March 1st, 2013

Letter writingA few weeks ago, I wrote about joining the Month of Letters Challenge. And I’m happy to say…I DID IT! I wrote a letter every day (except Sundays) in February. It was a more difficult project than I anticipated. I thought it would be a great way to reconnect with college friends I hadn’t spoken to in a while. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any of their mailing addresses, so I had to email or send them a Facebook message first!

I pulled out my old stationery and sealing wax kit and wrote letters. I sent books I thought my friends would enjoy with the note written on the inside cover; I sent letters and cards for birthdays instead of texting or emailing, as I usually would do; I even made Valentine’s day cards with fellow OOMers and sent those. It was more fun than I thought it would be!

I only received one letter back – most friends responded by emailing, Facebook messaging, texting, or calling me. I learned that one friend moved to Shanghai and another to Ghana! I felt so out of touch with their lives! But I achieved my goal. I wrote every day and learned what everyone has been up to. A few people were so excited by the project, they wanted to try it in March! So maybe I’ll receive a letter after all!

There is something special about writing letters; it feels more personal. Unlike an email, I don’t get to edit and rewrite my letter, so I have to really think about what I want to say before I wrote it down. March 1st to March 7th is “National Write a Letter of Appreciation Week,” so I think I’ll end my month long letter project with a card thanking someone in my life. After that, I might continue to write letters. Not every day, maybe just once a week.

Did you write any letters this month? Remember, it doesn’t have to be February to send a letter!
