Encouraging literacy, one event at a time
By Guest Blogger on March 15th, 2013
From book publishing and media to education and technology, literacy remains the cornerstone of all that we do here at Scholastic, and we take great pride in serving the needs of children, parents, and teachers. Last year, we announced the launch of Scholastic Event Services‘ Book for Books initiative: for each event booked at Scholastic HQ in SoHo, the company donates 100 books to a nonprofit. This week, our Event Services intern, Camilla Jorst, shares her thoughts on Book for Books. Take it away, Camilla!
In the last couple of months, I have learned a lot about Scholastic and the company’s long-standing commitment to literacy. Incorporating the values of Scholastic into the Event Services department was something that was extremely important, which is how the Book for Books initiative came to be.
The premise is simple: when you book an event through Scholastic Event Services, we will donate 100 children’s books to the nonprofit of your choice. It’s a way of giving back to the community and ensuring that literacy remains at the cornerstone of our mission company-wide.
Since we started Book for Books in 2012, we have donated over 12,000 books to nonprofit organizations across the country, and the feedback we have received has been overwhelming. One of my favorite thank you letters that we received said, “We are inspired by your commitment to diversity and community service. We recognize that with your kindness, our organization can continue to make a difference in the lives of students… Your donation is an important contribution to the stability and growth of our program.”
Book for Books has made me extremely proud to be an employee of Scholastic. It feels great to know that we are truly making a difference in the lives of children. Who would have thought planning an event could result in so much good will?
