National Teacher of the Year talks Common Core
By Tyler on October 9th, 2012
One of the perks of working at Scholastic is the opportunity to meet inspiring people like Rebecca Mieliwocki, the 2012 National Teacher of the Year.
A middle school English teacher from Burbank, CA, Ms. Mieliwocki recently began her “term” as Teacher of the Year and will spend the next year traveling the country (and internationally) to speak and advocate on behalf of the teaching profession. She visited Scholastic on Friday to speak to employees and we couldn’t resist asking her a couple of questions after her amazing presentation.
Here she is talking about the teacher “PR Problem.”
We also asked about the Common Core standards. In the video below she says teachers ought to be excited by the simplicity of these standards: “The big new thing is actually a smaller new thing.” She also talks about what teachers need for the standards to succeed. More content, more non-fiction text, more thematically-connected materials at their fingertips.
Take a look!
