It's finally here: the Summer Challenge! Think kids will break the world record for reading again?

"Read a book and see the world in 180 days"

“Read a book and see the world in 180 days”

The teacher station

As the school year approaches us (or has started for some) we love to highlight and share creative classroom ideas! Ever hear the expression books can take you to places you never dreamed of? Well that is exactly what’s happening in a particular READ 180 class this year.

Maria Richard, the proud winner of the 2012 Outstanding Educator Award, from North Street Elementary in Louisiana has transformed her classroom into every book lovers (and travelers) dream. To motivate her students she has decorated her classroom to look like different destination areas. Her theme “read a book and see the world in 180 days” references the number of school days in their school year.

Independent reading station

In true READ 180 fashion Maria has created three rotation areas, the first stop is Hawaii where she set up her teacher station (good pick, if you ask me), the second is the independent reading area as  the arctic and last but not least the computer station which embodies the cities of Paris, Egypt and New York!

Computer station

Now more then ever it’s so important to keep students motivated and engaged, and I can say from personal experience if I was able start in “Hawaii” and then cool off in an “igloo” all in one day—boy would I have loved school even more!

Aloha, and thanks for sharing, Maria!

Tell us in the comments section what you have planned to keep your students engaged. Are you transforming your classroom? Perhaps a class pet or even a class project planned, we want to hear from you!
