Happy Sister’s Day!
By Nadia on August 3rd, 2012
August 5 is Sister’s day! Flavorwire posted a list of Most Memorable Sisters, so at OOM we decided to make our own list.
Favorites twins: Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield from Sweet Valley
Jessica is outgoing, Elizabeth is quieter. Jessica wants to be the center of attention, Elizabeth is more down-to-earth. They’re as opposite as twins can be, but they are always there for each other.
Favorite non-biological sisters: Lena Kaligaris, Tibby Rollins, Bridget Vreeland, and Carmen Lowell from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
They’re not biological sisters, but their mothers attended prenatal classes together and they were born around the same time. They are so close, I think we can put them in the sister category.
Favorite devoted older sister: Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games.
Katniss would do anything to keep her younger sister Prim safe and happy – from making sure there is food on the table to volunteering herself to participate in the Hunger Games.
Favorite annoying (but loveable) little sister: Ramona Quimby from the Ramona series.
Older sister Beezus tries to be patient with her rambunctious, imaginative, and often embarrassing younger sister Ramona. Ramona’s oddities (from wearing bunny ears to taking one bite from every apple in the bunch), teach Beezus to be more creative, which helps her in her art class. (When I think of Ramona, I always remember the part in Beezus and Ramona when Ramona writes all over her library book! *gasp*)
Favorite Stepsisters: Dawn Schaefer and Mary Anne Spier from The Baby-sitters Club
There is a bit of tension when their parents get married and they share a room. They fight too much, so Dawn – knowing that Mary Anne thinks Dawn’s house is haunted – plays a few tricks on Mary Anne so she moves in to her own room. The two make up and continue to be BFFs, members of the BSC, and sisters.
Some other favorite sisters:
- Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia Bennet – Pride and Prejudice
- Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March – Little Women
- Elinor and Marianne Dashwood – Sense and Sensibility
- Anna and Kate Fitzgerald – My Sisters Keeper
- Mary and Anne Boleyn - The Other Boleyn Girl
- Katie, Sissy and Evy Rommely – A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Let’s not forget the Patil twins from Harry Potter. They may be minor characters, but as Michael pointed out, should never discount your first date to a formal!
Who are your favorite literary sisters?

I, too, thought it was great to read that you included Mary Anne and Dawn.
And Ramona! And the Rommely sisters!
