People come from all over the world to visit New York City, and we’re lucky enough to have many of these guests visit us in SoHo! Last week, Michael spoke with Publishing Perspectives about our international guests at The Scholastic Store and which books they love to bring home!

Among the favorites were books about New York City, like 123 NYC and the well-loved Eloise series! Travelers love to bring home a reminder of the placed they’ve visited, and books are a great way to do that! Our international friends also love some of the same iconic book characters that we do! Harry Potter and Clifford the Big Red Dog are always popular picks, and people are always looking for Gryffindor scarves no matter what the weather is like!

When I travel, I always love to visit book stores to see what other people in different parts of the country or around the globe are reading! Sometimes I pick up books, but I almost always buy some kind of blank notebook or paper set while I’m abroad. I find that it’s a nice way to remember my trip, and a good excuse to keep writing!

Michael noticed that when Geronimo Stilton (a character originally from Italy!) was featured in our store window, many European guests came in looking for the books. One of the most popular titles in the series is Big Trouble in the Big Apple, a story about Geronimo’s sister’s trip to New York! It really was the perfect souvenir for many of these guests: a book that would remind them of their trip to New York, allow them to read in a new language, and enjoy characters that they already know and love.

So tell us, do you buy books when you travel? Have you made any great discoveries during a trip abroad?

Ms. Beadsman says...

When I visited Paris years ago, I bought the French versions of two of my favorite kid lit titles–The Giving Tree and Owen (in France his name is Oscar)–as well as some super simple new French faves that I could enjoy with my little niece when I got home despite our limited understanding of the language. Jean Maubille’s Grrr!, a lift the flap book about animals wearing a mask pretending to be a scary wolf (with a super surprise ending) is still one of my all time favorites for little ones.
