It's finally here: the Summer Challenge! Think kids will break the world record for reading again?

U.S. Governors' Spouses sign on as Summer Challenge "Reading Ambassadors"

U.S. Governors’ Spouses sign on as Summer Challenge “Reading Ambassadors”

By on May 22nd, 2012

The 6th Annual Scholastic Summer Challenge officially kicked off on May 1 when students across the country began to log their minutes in an attempt to “Read for the World Record”. Just three weeks later, student readers have logged almost 20,000,000 minutes and are well on their way to beating last year’s record of 64,213,141 minutes.

Today, we’re excited to announce that 48 U.S. Governors’ Spouses, plus the Governors of Illinois, Vermont, and Arizona, have signed on as “Reading Ambassadors” of the Scholastic Summer Challenge. The Reading Ambassadors are an integral part of the program, each having pledged to reinforce the importance of summer reading by encouraging kids in their respective states to read every day over the summer months. The majority of participating Governors and Governors’ Spouses have also committed to holding summer reading events at a local school or library in their state. To help more kids have access to books they will love to read this summer, Scholastic will donate 500 books to the school of the Reading Ambassador’s choice in support of their participation in the Summer Challenge.
