FREE apps to keep students learning all summer
By Alex on May 10th, 2012
When students don’t read over the summer, teachers typically need 4 to 6 weeks in the fall to re-teach material students have forgotten! As this school year comes to a close Scholastic has released a number of apps that will help students retain important skills and motivate them to read and learning all summer long. But don’t say I didn’t warn you—these apps are extremely addicting, fun for the whole family and can make you hungry!
To Keep Kids’ READING Skills Sharp:
The Scholastic Summer Challenge is a FREE program to encourage students to have fun reading during the summer. Students can log minutes to win prizes and help set a new world record in Summer Reading. The 20 schools that log the most minutes will be featured in the 2013 Scholastic Book of World Records.
Scholastic Storia is a FREE e-reading app specifically designed to support kids’ reading, also helps parents monitor kids’ reading progress. Storia, which comes with FIVE FREE books, offers age appropriate titles for children from toddler to teen. Books on Storia also include vocabulary games, comprehension activities and fun video content as a reward when kids finish the book. Parents can set up individual bookshelves for each of their children, purchase new e-books and assign them to a particular child, and track a child’s progress through the book and see which words the child looked up in the age-appropriate dictionary.
To Keep Kids’ MATH Skills Sharp:
The Sushi Monster app is a fun FREE new game to practice, reinforce, and extend students math fact fluency. Sushi Monster helps students build reasoning strategies for addition and multiplication by having kids choose numbers to reach a target sum or product. With correct answers, kids earn points, stars, and trophies, and unlock new levels. Sushi Monster consists of seven addition and five multiplication levels, and kids can replay each round with new numbers.
Even with the school doors closed and text books shut students can still learn with these FREE Scholastic apps! Tell us what you think about our apps in the comment section!
