Having fun waiting for The Hunger Games!
By Nadia on March 23rd, 2012
Fans across the world have been eagerly awaiting The Hunger Games movie – especially everyone here at Scholastic! We’ve been having a lot of fun while we wait…life-size cardboard cutouts of Katniss, Peeta, and Gale have been “randomly appearing” in different parts of the office – hallways, next to people’s desks – and startling coworkers.
We’ve embraced the excitement with some silly puns (Lia: “I bet they sing the national Pan-antham!”), decorated desks (as Preeti mentioned on the Book Clubs blog Book Box Daily), and an office outing to see The Hunger Games movie!
To get into the spirit, I asked everyone at OOM which district they thought they would be a part of — District 1: Luxury goods; District 2: Masonry; District 3: Technology; District 4: Fishing; District 5: Power; District 6: Transportation; District 7: Lumber; District 8: Textiles; District 9: Grain; District 10: Livestock; District 11: Agriculture; or District 12: Mining. Here’s what everyone had to say:
Kristen: I’ll admit it… I can’t resist a pretty new handbag or pair of shoes! Therefore, District 1: Luxury is the place for me.
Dante: I’ll take District 2: Masonry because I like building things… and everyone knows masons are the true rulers of the world.
Morgan: I think, as the director of social media, I should say District 3: Technology…but my heart would always lie in District 4: Fishing (I’m from the coast!).
Alex: District 4. Being a “retired” ocean lifeguard, my skill set for water safety and marine life could come in handy. Plus, I love eating sushi – perfect for someone living by the water!
Megan would join Morgan and Alex in District 4: I’m proud to say I held the record in my 6th grade swim class for floating on my back. (I did, however, get a bloody nose and everyone had to evacuate the pool…awkward.)
According to the Hunger Games Tribute Guide, the citizens of District 6: Transportation don’t particularly like travel. This suits Michael: As I take three trains to get here in the morning, I will go with District 6. I do NOT love my commute.
I think I would be in District 8: Textiles. I love looking at fashion and would love to be where the clothes are made!
Lauren would join me in District 8 because “given my knowledge of sewing, quilting, and knitting (true story), I’d be a shoo-in.”
Lia had a more complicated answer: So thecapitol.pn says I’m District 2, but in all honesty, I don’t think I’d be a very good brick mason (no offense, Dante.). Here’s the problem: I’m not especially skilled when it comes to crafty things like textiles, and I don’t love animals enough to be part of District 10: Livestock. The fact that manual labor isn’t my strong suit really narrows it down, since that rules out lumber (District 7), agriculture (District 11), mining (District 12), and probably fishing (District 4 – though I do like the water.) An awful sense of direction means I’m not District 6 (Transportation)… clearly this doesn’t leave me with a lot of options. Maybe District 3: Technology so I could at least be a blogging, tweeting tribute? Or District 1 because I love bubble baths? LONG STORY SHORT: I think I’m District 9: Grain due to my intense love of carbs.
Anne: I think I’m District 11: Agriculture because I can romanticize climbing trees all day pretty well.
Jessica: I would be from District 12: Mining…mostly because that is where I was born and those are my people.
I guess no one at OOM is really suited for District 3 (Technology), District 5 (Power), District 7 (Lumber), or District 10 (Livestock). What district would you choose to be part of? (Or, if you want to be really official, you can register as a Panem citizen here: http://thecapitol.pn/)
