Live on The View today, Whoopi Goldberg kicked off Scholastic’s “One Million Bookprints for One Million Books” – a campaign to donate one million books to kids in need through the literacy nonprofit  Reach Out and Read. By joining Scholastic’s online book community YouAreWhatYouRead.com, honored with a Best Web Site for Teaching and Learning Award, you can help donate a book simply by creating a Bookprint – the 5 books that have shaped your life.  For every Bookprint, Scholastic Book Clubs will donate a book. It is that easy to make a difference this holiday season!

If you want to see some examples of Bookprints, take a look at some of our previous OOM posts and even Whoopi’s Bookprint. We can’t stop talking about Bookprints! Create yours and invite your friends and family to join and help Scholastic Book Clubs donate up to one million books to Reach Out and Read, helping put books into the hands of children in need through pediatricians offices around the country.

Reach Out and Read promotes literacy in young children by providing them with books and giving parents advice about reading aloud. Now more than ever, Reach Out and Read needs our help. Recent government funding cuts have made it a major challenge for literacy organizations like Reach Out and Read to continue to get books into the hands of kids in need.

Whoopi Goldberg reads to young patients at New York's Bellevue Hospital Pediatric Clinic to help launch Scholastic's 'One Million Bookprints for One Million Books' campaign to donate new books to children in need through 'Reach Out and Read', Monday, Nov. 28, 2011. (Photo credit: Scholastic)

Last week, we accompanied Whoopi to Bellevue Hospital Pediatric Clinic in New York where she read Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae to young patients. It was amazing to see how excited the kids became when some of the Scholastic Book Clubs team members went in to hand out books to the kids! After that, we went to the waiting room to pass out more books! Kids of all ages – and their parents – were so happy to have a book in their hand (and something fun to do while they waited for the doctors).

Today on The View, Whoopi also gave each audience member a book bundle, including The Invention of Hugo Cabret, The Hunger Games, The 39 Clues: Maze of Bones, Captain Underpants, and Clifford the Champion from Scholastic Book Clubs. (See our giveaway below to win one of five of these bundles!)

Through YouAreWhatYouRead.com, you can connect with book lovers from around the world, discover new reads and compare your Bookprint to those of more than 205 featured famous reading role models on the site! The site is a valuable tool for parents and teachers to use with young readers to build excitement and community around books. Once you create your Bookprint you can share these great reads with fellow book lovers, discover new titles, and connect with similar readers. What will you include in your Bookprint?

HUGE GIVEAWAY: Copy and paste your Bookprint’s URL in the comments by 11:59 PM (ET) on Sunday, December 18, 2011 and you’ll be entered for a chance to win a pack of books, including The Invention of Hugo Cabret, The Hunger Games, The 39 Clues: Maze of Bones, Captain Underpants, and Clifford the Champion. Five winner will be randomly selected from eligible entries. Read giveaway rules here  (Giveaway open to U.S. residents only; must be 18 or older to enter.)

My child loves the books from Scholastics. He is five and it has opened a new world up to him. We read about history, dragons, Dora, and Lightning McQueen in adventures that teach him values and morals while teaching him to read. That is the most important thing in the world for a child. Thanks for opening the world up for more children.
