It's finally here: the Summer Challenge! Think kids will break the world record for reading again?

In Our Feeds: Becks, book covers, and more!

Every Friday, we share a handful of links we found interesting, provocative, funny — or just plain cool. We call it In Our Feeds. Have a good weekend!

In an interesting moment of celebrity-gossip-meets-literature, sales of To Kill a Mockingbird have skyrocketed since David and Victoria Beckham named their new baby after Harper Lee. (Psst: To Kill a Mockingbird is also the most listed book on You Are What You Read!)

From our friends at MacMillain, here’s a fascinating inside look at how a book cover gets shot — models, props, lighting, and all!

Is it better for kids to have a “minimally effective” teacher or no teacher at all? A new teacher rating system makes way for even more job cuts to an already crippled education system.
The Daring Librarian talks about what “literacy” is today, and the modern day librarian’s role in supporting it. Hint: think “transliteracy.”

A reporter for Gigaom writes how changing Twitter posts from 140 characters to anything else wouldn’t make sense. Yanique LOVES that Twitter is 140 characters and agrees with the reporter that changing it would lead to ramblings, much like some blogs (not OOM, of course).

This artist re-interpreted the classic Disney princesses by drawing on historical images from each story’s setting and time period. Kristen likes the detail in the new images and in some cases thinks it makes them a little better than the original version!

And finally, I guess this proves that Michael is a retail dork: He’s now planning a field trip to Duane Reade to use its new visual assistant technology.
