It's finally here: the Summer Challenge! Think kids will break the world record for reading again?

A chance to improve your community with a BIG Idea

A chance to improve your community with a BIG Idea

By on June 8th, 2011

Today’s guest blogger is Melissa Brody from Scholastic Media. She’s here to give us the full scoop on one of our favorite contests: BE BIG! It gives people of all ages a chance to win grants that will be used to help out their community. Can you think of a better idea than that? If so, then maybe you need to submit your BIG Idea here.

Time is running out!  The 3rd annual BE BIG in Your Community Contest is still going on but there’s just ONE WEEK left for entries!  If you’ve been thinking about a BIG Idea that could improve your community, it’s time to act now!  Your BIG Idea might just win the grand prize of a $25,000 community grant.

Over the years we’ve seen some really BIG Ideas. People helping people, that’s what it’s all about!  The best thing is, its not just adults—kids, girl scouts, classrooms—so many people out there with BIG hearts and BIG actionable ideas.

Last year’s winner, 17-year-old Mackenzie is doing BIG things in her community with her Shelter Libraries project. Mackenzie started by collecting books that weren’t sold at garage sales in her neighborhood and donating them to shelters so other kids would have books to read.  After winning the BE BIG in Your Community Contest, her BIG Idea has taken off and she’s not only helping shelters in her community but ones all across the country!

Or Sandy Warrick and her kindergarten class’s BIG Idea for a “Kids Baby Food Drive.”  The kids knew right from the start that they had a really BIG idea that could help so many people.  Together they came up with one the “Kids Baby Food Drive,” which donated 6000 cans of baby food to community members that needed them. That’s a really BIG number!

We’re so proud to see so many people thinking outside the box to help their community every day!  And if you have a great idea, you need to tell us!  Remember no idea is too BIG or too small.  ENTER NOW! before the June 17 contest close—your BIG Idea could be next!
