It's finally here: the Summer Challenge! Think kids will break the world record for reading again?

Calling all teens…and not-so-teens who like teen lit!

Calling all teens…and not-so-teens who like teen lit!

By on April 7th, 2011

Hey, it’s Lauren Felsenstein again, here to tell you some awesome news for teen readers and fans of YA lit: there’s a new place where you can go to find out the latest book news, view exclusive content, get book suggestions, and more! Today, all of us at Scholastic are thrilled to announce the launch of this is teen.

It officially launches on April 26th, but right now, there’s some incredible content you can check out. Stop by the Facebook page (which you can go “like” now) to see it, and find out details about a national “this is teen Live” tour featuring some of your favorite YA authors—Meg Cabot, Libba Bray, and Maggie Stiefvater – who, not coincidentally, recently all sat down in a room together to talk teen! Check out the video after the jump.

So what can you expect from this is teen? The Facebook page will have tons of new content, like ongoing exclusive author videos, blog entries, contests, and trivia giveaways, and will highlight a wide range of YA authors and books published by Scholastic. You’ll also be able to connect and communicate with authors and other readers – kind of like a virtual book club!

And because part of the excitement of reading (especially reading teen lit!) lies in sharing your love of books, we’re also especially excited that Scholastic will be working with SCVNGR, the location-based gaming application platform to hold this is teen-related book challenges this summer! You’ll be able to use your smartphones at participating bookstores to accumulate points and be instantly enrolled in a sweepstakes for prizes. Some of the challenges will include tasks like coming up with the best opening line for a story, snapping photos of specific titles at participating bookstores, and getting books signed at local author events.

You guys are already talking about this is teen on Twitter (thanks!); now see what Publishers Weekly had to say about it.

And don’t forget to mark your calendars. The “this is teen Live” multi-city national tour featuring Meg, Libba and Maggie kicks off on May 24, 2011… and it will feature some exclusive tour-specific challenges on SCVNGR. Here are the details:

• May 24, 2011, Barnes & Noble in Carle Place, NY
• May 26, 201, The Scholastic Store in New York, NY
• June 13, 2011, Books Inc. in San Francisco, CA
• June 15, 2011, Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville, IL
• June 16, 2011, Wellesley Booksmith in Wellesley, MA
• July 23, 2011, Books & Books in Miami, FL

Are you excited for this is teen? Which of your favorite authors would you like to see featured?

I love this idea. I clicked the LIKE button on facebook, but I couldn’t add it to my favorites. You might want to check into that so it can automatically load on my page.

As an adult reader, and hopeful writer, of YA and Teen Fiction, and as a woman, I think this is a great idea! Obviously there are writers in this genre who are fabulous who aren’t women, Scott Westerfeld is my fave, there are also so many great women as displayed in the video above. If nothing else, it’s cool to see a group of women who are writing some of the best girl characters yet seen in books get together and talk about their experiences as women growing up. Not only that, you’re working to encourage the sharing of reading culture. And that’s pretty awesome too.

Alright, enough soap-boxing for me, I’m off to go find this page to “like” it officially.

Are there going to be more dates, or are those the only ones?
