Video gems from the Scholastic YouTube channels
By Morgan on November 16th, 2010
In the minute it’s taking you to read this blog post, 24 hours (hours!) of video was uploaded to YouTube. Two billion videos per day (day!) are served up on the site (site! Okay, I’m kidding with that one.).
I was trawling through the Scholastic YouTube channels earlier and realized we have loads of amazing, exclusive, informative, and just plain fun videos available for anyone to view — including kid-friendly videos on our Scholastic Kids channel, and videos for young adults and advanced readers on our Scholastic Teens channel. Because we here at OOM aim to be service-y, I thought I’d highlight the top three gems I found lurking in our archives.
3. Booktalks. From The Invention of Hugo Cabret to Zen Shorts, Allie Finkle to Airhead, we have a range of videos about some of your favorite books — brief, to-the-point clips that hook readers (or reluctant readers) and leave them wanting more. Here’s one for The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett:
2. Did you know we have a Chief Math Officer? We do, and he’s smart squared when it comes to ways to teach math to kids. In our What’s Hot playlist on the YouTube channel, there’s a video of Dr. David Dockterman talking about fractions. Before you groan, give it a shot — if you’ve ever tried to teach fractions, or witnessed a kid who tried learning them, this is a must-see video:
1. Our Kid Reporters may interview stars, but they often become the stars themselves — and looking at their archive of video content, it’s no surprise why! In the spirit of next week’s holiday, here’s a video of a Kid Reporter behind the scenes at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade:
There are so many amazing videos I left out — including when Arthur Levine talks about editing the Harry Potter books, and this spoof news story about The 39 Clues! And finally, even though this one is brand new, it deserves the top mention. It features Scholastic employees reciting the Reading Bill of Rights in celebration of our 90th anniversary — a powerful reminder about who we are and what we stand for:
I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that new videos are being added regularly, so be sure to bookmark our channels and check back often for some great content!
