Mexican art fun with Miguel!

All month, Maya & Miguel will be on OOM weekly to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! Last week: cooking with Abuela; today, we're making art with Miguel!

¡Hola! I’m Miguel. One of my favorite things to do – when Maya isn’t dragging me along for one of her “big ideas” – is to make art. I love to draw! It is quiet and peaceful, and lets me represent my view of my world. I find inspiration in all the goings-on around me – the neighborhood, the pet shop, Maya’s crazy schemes…

Someday, I hope to be as great of an artist as some of my favorite Mexican painters, like Frida Kahlo and Diego Riviera. They both show Mexican life and history in their own ways, and I especially like Friday Kahlo’s use of monkeys! Someday, I hope to travel to Mexico to do some drawings there myself. But, for now, I stick with what I know: mi familia and mis amigos!

You can see some of my drawings and even arrange them into your own story by playing “Miguel’s Sketchbook,” an online game that's part of the Maya & Miguel website. Have fun!
